The Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA) was developed by the Joint Commission. The first accreditation system in Canada started in 1917 with the help of The American College of Surgeons. The CCHSA operates in two languages, French and English, and has over 1.000 accredited institutions/clients. All the external surveyors are employees of already accredited facilities. It is possible for the CCHSA to achieve accreditation in only a certain part of the organisation. Institutions are able to specialise and concentrate only on certain departments.

The CCHSA considers accreditation as a continuous process. Therefore all the accredited facilities join the program in order to keep improving the overall quality in the long-term. This program is an evidence of the importance of accreditation and its positive influence on the communication between different medical facilities. With this approach, the CCHSA aims to become an internationally recognised accreditation system. Its international clients are from all around the world and have no significant link with Canada.
