The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) was set up in 1995, after the NAMAS (National Measurement Accreditation Service) and NACCB (National Accreditation Council for Certification Bodies) merged. UKAS’ main objective is to create confidence and trust among consumers in cooperation with the government. UKAS is an independent and private organisation, cooperating with the British government, which recognises UKAS as the main accreditation service in the UK.
The certification guarantees a certain quality. Therefore, foreign companies, who wish to attract British investors or consumers, undergo a UKAS accreditation. Especially hospitals in Turkey undergo the UKAS accreditation, besides the JCI accreditation.
UKAS is one of the few accreditation methods that does not have a period of validity, however if the quality of the institution is below the standards, UKAS can decide to withdraw the accreditation. UKAS is not only accrediting healthcare institutions, but also other organisations and items which can be accredited within the UK.
