The Jordanian Healthcare Accreditation Council (HCAC) is one of the youngest hospital accreditation systems in the world. It has been developed with the help of USAID with the goal to make Jordan more attractive for medical tourism. The USAID is the United States Agency for International Development, a non-profit USA government organisation that provides economic, development and humanitarian assistance around the world. Besides accreditation the HCAC also gives workshops to improve the quality in hospitals.
The HCAC is the only accreditation system which is totally transparent and openly published, in order to attract potential medical tourists. The HCAC also has the ambition to become an international accreditation organisation in the future, focusing on the Arabic world. Due to the availability of the data in Arabic and English, the accreditation is however suitable for the Western and the Arabic world. The figure next to the text, from the website of the HCAC (www.hcac. jo), shows that the main focus of the accreditation is the patient. During the accreditation process, all decisions made by the hospitals have to be in favour of the patient, instead of the profit. The HCAC accreditation is an outcome of the ‘Jordan Healthcare Accreditation Project’. This project had a focus to develop a successful accreditation system prepared for all the possible challenges.
